Generic Research-video case study: Interpol-If you really love nothing

I looked at Grimes music videos however they all seem to have a hit production value which I don't have the money or resources to produce. Therefore, I couldn't take a lot from her work to put into mine or spark any ideas so I went with Interpol instead.

The use of red lighting here creates a more romantic tone which I will want to input into my video, so my message gets through to the audience. Also the smoky background is conventional to a usual night performance and creates that sense of mystery for the background band members. Having the all black and red colour scheme makes for a darker scene and is almost ominous which red often connoting danger. Also this formation of them is creative havung two in the front with the centre stage being taken up by the main member of the band and then two in the back. It means they fill the whole screen while our focus is still drawn to the middle.

When we finally get a look at the main band member he steps into the light and the camera focuses onnhim. This is a reakky good editing technique to draw attention and instantly introduce him as a charcter of importance. I want to import this type of editing into my video to push my main character into the attention of the audience. He’s dressed extravagantly with a floral suit yet he still looks formal which is something I might use in my video to make it seem more high end.

This low angle shot of walking would be a good movement and transition shot of my main character moving between location. It makes for a good variety of shots and could be a good filler shot as its vital for me to take as much footage as possible.

This mid shot of nightlife focusing around her as the main character in the actual scenes compared to the band is intriguing. Theres a lot to unpack including differing characters, setting and mood lighting which hints that something either dangerous of lustful is going to happen next. I want to include some of this nightlife aspect into my piece as the band will be playing around night time in order to represent a concert type of aethetic. We follow her around for most of the video and see her doing loads of different things and having very different interactions. I want to take an element of this into my video considering that I want some shots of my main character longing for his love interest, thinking/stressing about the band or performance and I need activities in order to be able to input my intertextual references.

This close up shot of the singer is similar to that in the Radiohead video. It shows emotion ansd with the prop of a microphone makes him look professional and gives the band an image rather than a video with no features of the singers.

This use of screens within screens suits Andrew Goodwins theory and almost breaks the fourth wall. Flashing lights are a good way to make up for rocky transition shitd and add some reality into the video. I really want to focus in on this unique lighting of the red and flashing lights as it does have connotations of parties and flashing lights of paparazzi and fame which I would want to be apart of my bands life and career.

Generic Research- video case study: The National-Graceless

This shot is interesting since it uses an underwater shot. I might be able to incorporate this into my piece if I manage to get a device to film underwater as it makes for a very diverse video and creates a fun mise-en-scene through the use of these different shots. Especially being smartly dressed then being reckless and having fun juxtaposes that code-of-costume making the video unpredictable and more interesting and engaging for the audience as its something new that they havent seen before. This element of all of the band members just having fun in the video is an ongoingly joyful tone and gives them more character depth and personality in the video rather than just playing a role and trying to create a deeper meaning. Since I have a younger audience, I do want to cater some of this into my work to make sure it stays seemingly light-hearted at times. The black and white gives it an older house style throughout the video which could definitely be used to contrast some of my shots that I want to have colourful lighting in. It gives it a more serious tone but is again contrasted with their nature which makes the video have a bit of a satirical tone.

This low angle shot of them all stood is really fascinating due to the contrasting nature of it all. The tall trees and natural background are seen throughout the video, them in their suits and the black and white editing making for a more formal and serious tone yet they're chugging what I assume to be alcohol. It is all different and clashes, yet the mise-en-scene is still created in order to give meaning to them as a band. On the surface they're supposed to be very serious yet they're all still playing around and having fun in this industry. I'd like to take a shot like this, so I get all of my band members in it showcasing them all in a line as equals or as a final picture to go on my website. The fact they're all looking up shows them turning a blind eye to the serious tone people expect from them which I may not use as I do want my video to be seemingly more serious than this one, just with scattered fun elements.
This long shot of a couple of the members is clever as we see them all moving with the camera being still. It’s a good transition to a different setting for the music video. We again see the use of silhouette, so the audience take in some of the background instead of just the members. I also want to use this in my video to have a minor element of mystery in an opening shot of who the members are to create intrigue. This use of a natural background will be useful to me since I'm filming in summer and so the weather should be a pleasant background for some of my shots if I choose to do them during the day.

Generic Research-video case study: Radiohead-Creep

This shot of the silhouette suits the low lighting of the video and shows the band members with their instruments but keeps their identity hidden for this section of the video. It’s a clever technique used to engage the audience with Barthes enigma theory as we can't fully see what's going on and gives a sense of mood for the video. Using lighting means we can get a range of different shots giving the video more depth and to create more meaning to match the lyrics. For exampleI'm a creep” and being hidden in the shadows creates this sense of being different/ an outsider therefore following Andrew Goodwin's theory.

This use of a close up shot of his face shows emotion and gives him more personalisation with the song as we see him sing it and feel the music showing its meaning to him. The blurred background draws in the audiences focus to him and therefore presents him as the main singer and focal point of the band. this is further shown by his eye contact being a direct mode of address representing him as confident and serious. the camera often will pan just around him suggesting he should be the centre of all the focus when he's on screen and him staying still while the camera moves shows him as important. I want to incorporate this into my video as I want to have a main character/singer in the video to make sure there's high clarity in what's going on and so I don’t over complicate it with too many different people.

Images of the audience create the mise-en-scene of liveliness and the enjoyment people get out of the band. This streams a sense of popularity through the video and promotes the band as performers as well as music producers. I want to transfer this sense of popularity to my band as they will be a cross convergent brand with many chances of audience interaction on my website which means it's vital for an active and large fan base.

The over the shoulder shot here gives us a different viewpoint of the actual musician and since we have seenfrom the crowd ‘s viewpoint it gives us a full range of what the scene is like. The low lighting is typical of a performance and further shows the mise-en-scene to be lively and late at night creating a sense of mystery and recklessness in the feeling of the video. I ‘d like to use this in my video in the shots I have if the whole band playing, I want it to seem like they ‘re playing in front of an audience so I get the same sense of liveliness and strong emotion paired with the lyrics.

This shot is interesting as his head is not in it. The shot of just the body and the instrument draws the focus to the soundtrack and how he's creating the music rather than himself as a musician. I'd like to use this with some of my backup players as that could help me to pinpoint my main character. This is also useful for filler shots being used to fill the time of the video while still fitting my theme and genre and interesting the audience.
This creation of a character is interesting through codes of costume and mannerisms. He's looking away from the camera with indirect mode of address showing him as more mysterious compared to the other characters. This links to the beginning of the video when all we can see is his silhouette. Also, his tight clothing which reveals a portion of his collar bones is typically quite a feminine way to dress. I want to adopt this into my own video as it is iconic in this genre to use femininity to crate this” mad” or interesting sense of a persona (Kurt Cobain’s dress). Considering I want to have one of my characters having a gay love interest in the video, this will be good to take into consideration to out into my video as it shows them dressing how they want and not being afraid to be different. The use of coloured light seen throughout the video in the background creates a sense of winder and adds more colour to the seemingly dark coloured lighting and background of the video. Only seen behind the artists it shows them as more extravagant and that they're willing to put in the work in order to promote themselves. I want to use this in my video to add more depth and that colourful aspect in my video in order to stand out. Also, if I choose certain colours to be in it, I can match that on my website to create a recognisable brand for this song to further promote it.
